Restaurant group Trenchers is expanding to the Lake District with a £1m opening in Bowness-on-Windermere.
The group, which operates Whitley Bay’s popular Spanish City and has restaurants in Whitby, North Yorkshire, will be taking over the site of the Windermere Lake Cruises’ Boatman’s Café. The £1million project will see the venue renovated and refurbished ahead of its launch in spring 2026.
Trenchers was established in the 1980s and is known for its high quality fish, chips and seafood offering. It has twice won Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year at the National Fish and Chip Awards as well as Fry Magazine’s 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants Awards in 2024.
Trenchers CEO Kyle Mackings said: ”We’re so excited to be opening a new venue in Cumbria. Our fish, chips and seafood products see visitors and locals lining up around the streets of Whitby and Whitley Bay so I’m sure that it will prove as popular in the Lake District.
“The refurbishment will take us right through winter creating important jobs in Cumbria and bringing income to the local economy. Local suppliers and contractors are already being used for the initial structural work and we anticipate doing the same for the interior fit out.”
Once completed, the venue is expected to create a further 50 new roles with full, part-time and seasonal positions available.
In addition to offering take away and general dining, Trenchers plans to introduce options for large group bookings and coach parties.
