London’s The Mayfair Chippy has secured an AA Rosette for its Knightsbridge restaurant just over a year after opening.
It is the second AA rosette the group holds, with its sister site in Mayfair having retained a rosette for the past 10 years.
AA inspectors visit anonymously and assess restaurants on quality, consistency and skill. A single AA Rosette is awarded to establishments that “stand out in their local area” and that demonstrate good quality ingredients handled with care and understanding. Inspectors only reveal themselves at the end of the visit, leaving a card and confirming the result.
Co-owners Jamie Jones and Pete Taylor, who both previously worked in fine dining, said the recognition reflects the team’s work across both sites. Jamie said: “Holding a rosette in Mayfair for 10 years is almost unheard of for a fish and chip restaurant. For Knightsbridge to now have one as well is a great achievement for the team. Pete and I aren’t in the restaurants every day, so this really is down to them. It shows that our team is delivering quality and consistency so it’s a massive pat on the back to them.”
The business employs around 125 staff across the two restaurants and serves approximately 600 covers a day in Knightsbridge and 700 in Mayfair.
Pete added: “It’s a great stamp of quality for us and for the industry. Fish and chip restaurants are often overlooked, but there are so many phenomenal ones producing not only great quality fish and chips but beautiful seafood dishes too. Awards like this help the industry get taken more seriously.”
The award comes at a challenging time for the hospitality sector, with staffing shortages and cost pressures affecting day-to-day operations. The Mayfair Chippy recently removed cod from its menu due to supply and pricing issues, replacing it with hake.
Jamie added: “Hake is a great fish, it’s meaty and white and sits between cod and haddock. Staff have been fully briefed and they are enjoying it, and so are the customers too.”
