Former-US presidential runner and secretary of state Hillary Clinton enjoyed fish and chips at Colmans of South Shields whilst on a tour of the North East town last week.
Mrs Clinton was in town as a guest at the annual South Shields Lecture, organised by the town’s former Labour MP David Miliband. The event concluded with a charity meal for over 100 guests at the popular South Shields restaurant.
Owner Richard Ord Snr comments: “Hillary was wonderful, she absolutely loves fish and chips and she said I could quote her on that!
“She ordered fish, chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce and said it was fantastic.”
Richard said the team were thrilled to cook for Mrs Clinton, adding: “Hillary was so nice, she was very natural and more than happy to talk to the team and have photos taken with them all.
“She did a short speech and she went round all the tables speaking to every single person. She was fantastic and got several rounds of applause, people were thrilled to see her.
“It’s wonderful, it’s great for the town and for the team at Colmans, they were thrilled.”
Mrs Clinton has family links to the north-east of England as her great-grandfather was a coal miner from Stanley in County Durham.
Colmans has hosted the annual South Shields Lecture dinner for the last 15 years with the list of guests including former Prime Minister John Major and singer Sting.
