07 lets get loaded

National Chip Week, taking place from 2nd–9th October, is being highlighted by The Q Partnership as an opportunity for fish and chip shops to put greater focus on chips and introduce new menu ideas.

Friars Pride, Henry Colbeck & V.A. Whitley are all encouraging shops to consider making chips the main feature of limited-edition dishes, rather than treating them solely as an accompaniment. Their suggestions include loaded chips and fries topped with chicken, cheese, curry sauce and spicy seasonings, alongside street-food-inspired combinations.

The Q Partnership recommends that shops put their own interpretation on National Chip Week, for example by introducing a limited-edition loaded-chip special for the duration of the event. Other ideas include asking customers to vote for their favourite topping or offering a free dip with every loaded portion.

Highlighting the potential for these types of dishes to appeal to younger customers, the Q Partnership believes this demographic is more adventurous with food than ever. As a result, they are looking for bold flavours, generous portions and a menu that gives them something to talk about. They also want food that looks good, so a stacked, saucy, loaded portion of chips is made for social media: colourful, craveable and perfect for a quick post, story or group chat recommendation.

For existing customers, a limited-time special can provide an opportunity to try something different, while shops can use the week to test new menu combinations and gauge customer interest.

It also recommends involving staff and customers in developing ideas, including asking customers which toppings they would like to see and challenging the team to come up with their own chip-based special.

With National Chip Week a chance to drive footfall, add energy to menus, and create content that gets people talking, The Q Partnership has produced a range of posters, social media assets and other campaign materials available to download free of charge by clicking here.

The key message is to make chips the main event by creating bold toppings, great sauces, customisable choices and dishes that feel a little different from the everyday.
