Ahead of Coeliac Awareness Month in May, Kerry Foods is helping operators meet the demand for gluten free fish and chips safely and consistently

According to Coeliac UK, around 1 in 100 people in the UK has coeliac disease, yet only 36% are clinically diagnosed. This leaves an estimated half a million people undiagnosed, highlighting a significant and expanding market. In addition, gluten free diners often influence where groups choose to eat, meaning that catering effectively for this audience can drive valuable additional footfall from friends, family and colleagues.

When serving this market, trust and consistency are essential. Operators require products made in dedicated gluten free environments, with full traceability to minimise risk and build confidence. At the same time, these products must deliver on taste and performance, matching the quality of their gluten containing counterparts.

Goldensheaf

Goldensheaf Gluten Free Batter Mixture, made with a blend of three premium quality, British-sourced gluten free flours and milled at the company’s manufacturing site in Portbury, Somerset, delivers a light golden colour and crispy, flaky texture across a range of fried foods.

At the Real Food Cafe in Tyndrum, Perthshire, owner Sarah Heward has built a strong gluten free offering using Goldensheaf Gluten Free Batter Mixture. She comments: “Goldensheaf’s gluten free batter produces a product that surpasses anything the café had previously made. We joke that fish fried in gluten free batter mix is better and considered more superior to the standard version, with a light, crisp texture that doesn’t absorb excess oil. Over the years, we have tried a selection of the well-known gluten free batters, but we have never been tempted away from Goldensheaf.”

Her experience also highlights the wider commercial impact. Gluten free fish and chips alone generated £90,000 in sales in 2025, accounting for 3.5% of total revenue. While this may seem modest, Sarah estimates that catering to gluten free customers contributes closer to £400,000 overall to the business, due to the additional customers they bring and the increased sales of items such as drinks and desserts.

Dinaclass

Similarly, Dinaclass Gluten Free Curry Sauce offers the same authentic chip shop flavour as traditional recipes, in a rich, thick and spicy format. Supplied as a powder in 4.54kg bags, it produces up to 18 litres of sauce and can be prepared quickly by simply adding water and bringing to the boil.

Susan Ord of Land and Sea in Polmont, Falkirk, has been using Dinaclass Gluten Free Curry Sauce since it first launched over 10 years ago and has seen first-hand how a versatile gluten free option can support operations. “If you can get one curry sauce that can do it all, it’s a win-win. With Dinaclass, you’ve still got the flavour of the chip shop, but you’ve got the added benefit of it being gluten free and it’s suitable for vegans as well. Everyone is included.”

She also highlights its practicality in service, adding: “It’s really easy to make up, it makes a big batch and lasts well. People don’t just have it with chips either – they pour it over everything.”

As demand for gluten free options continues to increase, using trusted, high quality products like Goldensheaf and Dinaclass can help ensure both compliance and growth during Coeliac Awareness Month and beyond.
