Denise McMurdo

Age: 55

Position: Assistant manager

Nominated by: manager Jamie Toland, who says: “Denise is a highly valued member of our team who deserves recognition for her hard work. She had a tough time recovering from Covid but came back better than ever. Denise is a huge part of the business. She is always there with a smile, ensuring everything is prepared and running smoothly, which takes so much of the pressure off us in the mornings and means we don’t have to worry about anything. Her customer service is excellent, and she makes all the customers feel part of the Taylor’s family. Denise is an absolute pleasure to work alongside.

How long have you worked at Taylors?

I’ve been here for 18 years. It started with a phone call with the owner, Anne, who invited me in for an interview. Before I knew it, I was part of the team. In that time, I’ve undergone all sorts of training, from customer service to allergen awareness to fire safety.

What are your responsibilities?

My main job is filleting the fish, ensuring the weight and size are correct so all the fish is ready. But my responsibilities also extend to ensuring the smooth running of the shop, from keeping up documentation to ensuring equipment is up and running to having fresh, hot sides ready to serve at lunchtime.

What is your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is working with the public. It’s the feeling of knowing I can make a difference in somebody’s day. And being mindful that you could be the only person some customers speak to that day.

What is your least favourite part of the job?

My least favourite part of the job is cutting fish in the winter when they are super cold – and so are my hands. But the fish are so fresh it’s worth it!

What is it you like about working at Taylors?

The other staff members as we are a great team and support each other. And working with the general public means no two days are the same as I work behind the scenes and on the counter. I have a valued work life, which is enjoyable.

How do you feel to be nominated as an Unsung Hero?

I’m flattered to be nominated. My work colleagues make my job more rewarding than people can imagine. For anyone working in this industry, it’s a great feeling to get this kind of recognition for playing my part in supporting Jamie, Anne and Bob.
