The Cod’s Scallops has featured in a TV advert alongside I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here winner Sam Thompson.
The 30-second advert for Hits Radio saw staff at the Harborne branch teach Sam every aspect of chip shop life from portioning fish to making batter and boxing up food.
Owner John Molnar comments: “It was good fun. Sam is a really nice guy, he really got stuck in and when he saw us blanching the chips, storing the fish in specific fish fridges, making batter with really cold water, he said how amazing it was and that he had no idea how much went into it.”
Sat at home with his children when he saw the advert on Channel 5, John adds: “It was brilliant. Any publicity is amazing but to get on national TV is really good. Yes, they were filming at The Cod’s Scallops but the emphasis was on great fish and chips and quality ingredients, which helps promote fish and chips as an industry.”
John was embargoed from telling staff who was coming in and only knew himself the day before who was starring in the advert.
John adds: “Alicia, our supervisor, walked in the door at 3 o’clock to start a late shift and she didn’t have any idea what was going on. I said, you’re on TV if you want to be and she said, yes. They had a competition where they raced to see who could box up their fish the quickest and Alicia won – Sam broke his fish when he was doing it!
“It was an all-round great day. It was great for our profile and for the industry.”
