VE Day

Over 130 fish and chip shops across the UK have come together to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a special one-day only discount.

The shops have all agreed to offer 10% off walk-up orders over £50 on Thursday 8th May, inviting communities to commemorate this significant milestone with the nation’s beloved dish.

Organised by The NFFF, the initiative also sees participating shops featured on an online map, making it easy for customers to find businesses taking part. Shops still wanting to register to take part can do so at: https://vefishandchips.co.uk/register/

The initiative pays tribute to the resilience and unity displayed during World War II. Fish and chips held a special place during the war, remaining one of the few foods not subject to rationing and Sir Winston Churchill himself dubbed them the “good companions!”. They provided comfort and a sense of normalcy to the British people during challenging times and helped to keep everyone involved in the war effort nourished.

Emphasising the importance of the campaign, NFFF president Andrew Crook said : “This is a unique opportunity to remember how the nation came together to overcome adversity 80 years ago and how they came through it.  It is a humbling thought that the fish and chip industry played a part in the war effort.  Even on the D-Day landings, the initial push into Europe by the Allies, they used “fish” and the response “and chips” as one of the passwords. Fish and chips is still the nation’s favourite dish and we hope customers make us their preferred choice over the VE Day celebrations this week.”
