A fish and chip shop in Leicestershire is serving up fish in a Pimm’s and strawberry batter during this year’s Wimbledon tennis tournament, which starts on Monday 27th June.
Chris’s Fish and Chips in Barwell is no stranger to flavoured batter, with the chippy selling a variety of limited editions in the past including cranberry and brandy, Champagne and prosecco.
Owner Strad Kyriacou has replaced all the water in his usual batter mix with Pimm’s and added in a few blended strawberries. Served up alongside chips and a tennis ball of mushy peas and tartare sauce, the Wimbledon special will be on the menu for the duration of the championships at a 20% price premium.
Strad comments: “Nothing says Wimbledon more than Pimm’s and strawberries and I thought, you know what? I can turn that into a batter.
“We spent about half a session playing around with the recipe and making small batches to get the right consistency. It smells quite strong at first but once it’s cooked a lot of the smell burns away and it has a lovely sweet aftertaste.
“It’s a bit of fun. When you’ve got foods that you can associate with an event, it’s quite nice to mess around with them. We’ve incorporated traditional fish and chips with a twist.”
Strad admits he doesn’t watch tennis usually, however, he always tunes into Wimbledon and would like to see Britain’s Emma Raducanu win the Women’s Singles title this year and Spain’s Rafael Nadal take the Men’s.
