Nortech Foods has become the first UK manufacturer to produce Bag-in-Box seed oils, introducing an innovative packaging solution for the foodservice and food manufacturing sectors.
Developed to reduce plastic use, improve operational efficiency, and support a more sustainable supply chain, the new Bag-in-Box range delivers practical benefits for wholesalers, food manufacturers and fish and chip shop operators alike.
The launch follows a significant investment in a new fully automated production line at Nortech Foods’ Doncaster facility. Initially available in 20 litre formats under leading brands, including Superior, the range will soon expand to include smaller pack sizes and a selection of oils, including rapeseed oil, high-oleic sunflower oil and vegetable oil.
Designed with ease of use in mind, the new packaging offers several advantages over traditional rigid plastic bottles. Integrated handles at both the top and bottom of the box make lifting, carrying and dispensing easier, helping to reduce strain during everyday handling. The controlled dispensing system also minimises the splashback often associated with plastic bottles, creating a cleaner and safer working environment. Its square design also maximises storage efficiency, allowing packs to stack neatly and occupy less space than conventional bottles.
Once empty, the cardboard outer can be separated from the inner bag, flattened, and recycled, significantly reducing the storage space required for used packaging. The flexible inner bag also takes up minimal room, helping to reduce waste volume and improve back-of-house waste management.
Using significantly less plastic than conventional bottles, the Bag-in-Box format helps businesses reduce plastic consumption while supporting their own sustainability objectives.
The environmental benefits extend throughout the supply chain. Flat-packed packaging components require considerably less warehouse space before filling, while the finished packs stack more efficiently during storage and transport. This enables more units to be transported per vehicle, reducing the number of journeys required and helping to lower associated carbon emissions.
The packaging is also manufactured in the UK, supporting domestic manufacturing while further reducing its carbon footprint.
