Nominated by: Tiffany Irvin, co-owner of The Fish Works, who says: “Johnny has been part of our team for eight years and he really is an unsung hero. He never lets us down, he is always there, and you know you can rely on him day in, day out to be there and go above and beyond. He is far more than an employee, he is an important part of our team who always turns up to support other team members at The Fish Works.

How long have you worked at The Fish Works?

I have worked at The Fish Works for eight years. Before joining the team, I worked at a small funfair along the promenade. During that time, I got to know Ross, Tiffany and the rest of the team well, often stopping for a chat whenever I saw them. Eventually, I decided to leave that job to challenge myself. Knowing the team at The Fish Works, I approached Ross and Tiffany about any opportunities available, and they offered me the chance to join the business. Over time, I’ve been trained in different areas of the business, including preparing chips, accepting deliveries, managing stock, and supporting the day-to-day operation of the shop. Looking back, joining The Fish Works was one of the best decisions I made and I am proud to have been part of the business for the last eight years.

What are your responsibilities?

My responsibilities include packing away fish deliveries, preparing tatties, getting The Fish Works open and ready for service and helping to ensure that everything is prepared for a busy day. I work closely with my colleagues as part of a team, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and operations run smoothly throughout the day.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Finishing a busy shift knowing that I have worked hard and contributed to a successful day for The Fish Works. It is rewarding to see the results of everyone’s efforts and know that I have played my part in helping the team achieve its goals.

What’s your least favourite part of the job?

Counting the fish. While it is not my favourite task, I understand why it is important and appreciate that it helps the business manage stock effectively and keep everything running as it should.

What is it that you like about working at The Fish Works?

Being part of a team. Everyone works together to achieve the targets set each day and there is a real sense of teamwork and support. I take pride in doing my job well and helping the business succeed. The Fish Works has given me opportunities to learn new skills, develop my confidence and build strong friendships with the people I work alongside every day.

How do you feel about being nominated as an Unsung Hero?

I am grateful to have been nominated, but I do not see myself as an Unsung Hero. I simply come to work each day and do my job to the best of my ability for both myself and my employers. It is nice to be recognised, but I believe I am just doing what is expected of me. If anything, I see this nomination as recognition for the whole team, because we all work hard together to make sure every day is a success.
