With more than 150 years of combined expertise, Goldensheaf and Henry Jones deliver consistent, high quality batter mixes made in the UK using home-grown wheat

For fish and chip shops, promoting the fact that a core ingredient is home-grown and UK-milled offers a straightforward way to connect provenance with everyday quality.

Made in UK Day, celebrated on Monday 9th March, is the perfect time to share the story of Goldensheaf and Henry Jones – two established batter brands, milled in the UK using British-grown wheat, with heritage and consistency that friers can trust.

Heritage

Goldensheaf, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of batter mixes, celebrated its 80th anniversary last year. First produced in 1945, the brand boasts a flour heritage that dates back to 1857. That history is not just about longevity, but about delivering products to meet the needs of modern fish and chip shops while maintaining reliable performance in the fryer.

Henry Jones is equally rooted in tradition. Widely recognised as the original batter mix, its recipe was developed more than 75 years ago and has remained a closely guarded secret ever since. While the formulation has been fine-tuned over time to reflect evolving tastes, its key characteristics remain: a unique texture full of ripples and spikes, a softer bite and a depth of colour, and a coating that hugs fried food closely.

Over the decades, both brands have expanded their ranges to include batter mixes that deliver different fry colours, tastes and textures, reflecting the industry’s diverse regional preferences. Even dietary preferences have been considered with the addition of a gluten free option, ensuring shops can cater to changing requirements without compromising on quality.

Sustainably grown

In addition to their history and expertise, what also unites both brands is their manufacturing approach. All Goldensheaf and Henry Jones wheat is sustainably grown and milled within a 40-mile radius of its manufacturing site in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. This local supply chain ensures consistency, reduces food miles and provides a genuine ‘Made in Britain’ story that shops can share with their customers.

Karen Heavey, brand manager at Kerry Foodservice, says: “Made in the UK Day is an opportunity to highlight something our customers value every day. Goldensheaf and Henry Jones are milled in the UK using British wheat, and that local control is central to the quality and reliability friers depend on.”

That reliability is echoed by the thousands of fish and chip operators who continue to use both brands today. In Cardiff, Mr Shahz of Five Star Fish Bar has used Henry Jones Gold Batter Mix for more than 20 years. He comments: “The texture is really good. It gives a nice, even, thin coating that stays crisp. The colour is beautiful too – golden, just like its name – and my customers love it.”

In Birmingham, Anastasios “Stan” Economou of The Harborne Fish Bar has relied on Goldensheaf Standard since 1980. Creating a product he says he is “proud to serve” to his customers, he adds: “The fact I have a loyal following tells me I’m doing it right – and Goldensheaf is a key element of my success.”
