Two County Durham chippies are up against a London shop as the three finalists in the Training and Development category at the 2026 National Fish & Chip Awards are announced.
Bells Fish and Chips (Framwellgate Moor) in Durham, and Yarm Road Fish and Chips in Darlington will go head-to-head with Stones Fish and Chips in Acton, West London.
The judging panel shortlisted these businesses for showing great passion for investing in their teams with inductions, onboarding and ongoing training, to additional qualifications and leadership opportunities.
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers and one of the awards organisers, said the contenders have created a culture where employees’ learning and personal development is at the heart of their businesses. He added: “Fish and chip shops are often the first place of employment for many young people so it’s important to give their careers a great foundation to build on. A workplace where levelling up is encouraged, will be one that thrives. There will be great service, delicious food and happy customers when the team is fulfilled and well looked after.
“Training isn’t just something to do, it’s a clear indicator that every individual is highly valued and part of something special. Greater things are coming to the 2026 Training and Development finalists and it’s a pleasure to thank them for their wonderful contributions to the fish and chip trade.”

The winner will be announced on Wednesday 25th February at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel in London.
