Richard Ord MBE, owner of the award-winning Colmans Fish & Chips and Colmans Seafood Temple, has been granted the honorary Freedom of the Borough by South Tyneside Council.
A prominent South Shields businessman and fourth-generation owner of Colmans Fish & Chips, Richard was bestowed the honour in recognition of exceptional entrepreneurship, philanthropy and services to the hospitality industry in the borough.
The Freedom of the Borough is the highest honour the council can give, reflecting the significant impact recipients have made on the local community.
Commenting on the recognition, Richard said: “It’s wonderful, just wonderful, especially the timing, it couldn’t have been better, because it’s our centenary in 2026. For all the Colmans, for all our staff over the last century, and not forgetting our customers, it’s just fantastic.”
Reflecting on the achievement as the business gets set to celebrate 100 years, Richard added: “It’s great being alive and receiving awards – in that order! But we’re still learning even after all this time. The industry is constantly changing, and we adapt with it. It is challenging at the moment, but the fish and chip industry is well-positioned to emerge from it. We’re still really, really competitive and the best value for money takeaway.”
Unaware he was being considered for the honour, Richard received the news in a phone call, adding: “I knew nothing about it so it was a huge surprise. It’s a great honour, especially to receive it in a place where you’ve worked and where your family has worked and lived for over a century. I’ve never lived outside the borough or worked outside the borough!”
Starting cutting fish at Colmans when he was just 15, Richard has continued the family legacy with a strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation. His commitment to environmental responsibility led Colmans to become the first MSC certified fish and chip shop in England and the inaugural winner of the Good Catch Award.
Richard has also represented the region internationally, serving fish and chips at prestigious events such as the Queen’s Birthday celebrations in Guatemala and at the British Ambassador’s residence in Rome. As an ambassador for the industry, he has trained hundreds of young friers and chefs, operating an open-door policy that has helped shape many careers.
In 2021, Richard was awarded an MBE for his service to the hospitality industry and the regeneration of South Tyneside. His businesses have supported local theatres, sports teams, and charities, including sponsorship of pantomimes at the Customs House.
Councillor Tracey Dixon, leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “Richard Ord is a shining example of the very best of South Tyneside. His dedication to our community, his pioneering work in hospitality, and his unwavering support for local causes, has earned him admiration and respect, making him a true champion of the town.”
A formal ceremony to confer the Freedom of the Borough will take place next year.
