Following The Codfather being crowned one of the UK’s 50 best chip shops at the Fry Awards 2026, Pukka chats to the owner to discover more about the shop’s road to success

Ilham Shamchiyev, owner of The Codfather, has always been proud to be part of the chip shop community: “I’ve always had a passion for hospitality and traditional British food. A chippy tea has always been such a British staple, so in 2007 I decided to bring my passion to life and open a high-quality, community-focused chip shop. 

“Since the very first day we opened our doors nearly 20 years ago, we’ve been proudly serving Pukka. Its quality is unmatched and pie and chips have always taken pride of place on our menu. Our bestseller is definitely the Pukka Steak & Kidney Pie, it’s a classic that always goes down well.”

Pukka first introduced its new POS in autumn 2025 as a way to give back to chip shops and offer something fresh and exciting to help modernise their shops and draw in customers. Chip shops are an integral part of Pukka’s identity, so it was important for the brand to develop POS that enhances each shop while still allowing its individuality to shine through.

The Codfather was crowned one of the UK’s 50 best chip shops at the 2026 Fry Awards and as a prize draw winner, was awarded Pukka’s new POS and installation free of charge. Ilham talked to us more about what this recognition means to him: “We’re so pleased to be recognised as one of the top chip shops across the country for the second year in a row. To then find out we were the winner of Pukka’s new POS was even better. My favourite piece from the kit is the illuminated sign – it’s really eye-catching and ties the whole shop together.” 

With 2026 off to a brilliant start for the team at The Codfather, Ilham is confident about the positive future of the chippy. “I think the traditional chippy will thrive as long as we keep a balance – we need to respect our classic menu options while also embracing innovation and convenience for customers. This year, we want to grow our customer base, improve efficiencies and keep delivering the high standard of food and service that our customers expect,” concludes Ilham.
