Millers Fish & Chips in Haxby, York, has been named Best Food & Drink Establishment at The Yorkshire and Humberside Family Business Awards.
The accolade comes just weeks after the family opened a new site at Shambles Market Food Court just yards from where the business first started in the 1950s.
Nick Miller, who runs the business with his dad David, comments: “It feels amazing to have won an award that is all about family business, especially having just opened in the Shambles last month, which is where my nan and grandad started with their fish stall and where Millers started.
“I rang my nan straight away as she was waiting up to hear from us and she said, I’m so proud of you, Nick. The business wouldn’t be what it is without you today and I’m so glad you’ve pushed forward.
“The award was really a stamp of approval to say, yes, we’ve done a good job.”
Millers, which won the UK title of Fish & Chip Shop of the Year in 2018, has been in the family for four generations.
Talking about working alongside his family, Nick adds: “We’re a good team, me, dad and mum. It’s nice that we’re still working together after all these years.
“We’ve got a great balance because there are roles that dad does that he’s better at and there are roles that I do that I’m better at. Dad takes on a lot of the training and I come up with new ideas, drive the business forward and open up new sites. It’s a good dynamic that works really well.”
The awards, which celebrate the success and accomplishments of family-owned businesses throughout the region, saw Nick and David reunited with food writer and broadcaster Nigel Barden, who hosted the night.
Nick comments: “Nigel presented us with our award when we won Fish & Chip Shop of the Year, but it was such a crazy moment that Nigel forgot to let us talk – not that we probably could have spoken because we were so emotional. When we won last night’s award, Nigel said he wanted to ask David to say some words and he explained the story – and so Dad ended up doing a really nice speech about how proud he is, which was really touching. I really appreciated Nigel doing that for us.”
