Best Fry, part of the Lee Group, has become a highly respected name in the fish and chip industry thanks to a strong and consistent focus on quality. The Lee Group began in 1988, expanding over the years to six successful sites and winning numerous industry accolades such as Best Fish and Chip Shop in Hampshire as voted by local Daily Echo readers.
Offering a traditional fish and chip menu, the secret to Best Fry’s success is their choice of batter – Middleton Foods Kings Extra Gold.“The batter works really well; it comes out perfect every time,” says John Henry Lee, Company Director of Lee Group. “It’s a huge part of why our customers come back and why we get so much positive feedback online amongst the fish and chip community.”


Innovation is also embedded in the Best Fry approach. The team created their own utensil – The Lee Fish Lifter – designed to make it easier for staff to handle fish without breaking the delicate batter. For John, it comes down to simple principles: “A lot of the top fish and chip shops have the same things in common… quality ingredients, quality fish and quality oil.”
John’s long-standing partnership with Middleton Foods has been a natural fit. “I’ve known Wayne for a long time. I sampled Middleton Foods batter years ago and that’s what we continue to use to this day,” explains John. “Wayne, Jason and Lee visit regularly, and we’ve built a great relationship with them all both personally and professionally.”
Having visited the Middleton Foods factory, John adds: “It’s great to see the process of how they create these batters. And ultimately, they’re a great bunch of guys and we work really well together.” Lee Group now proudly uses over 16 tonnes of Middleton batter every year, serving customers excellent fish and chips, one perfectly battered portion at a time.
