“I chose Kat because she has worked extremely hard to become an amazing fish frier. She started part-time on the counter and now she supervises, is in charge of supplier orders, and cooks the food on the busiest shifts of the week. She should be so proud of how far she has come and she deserves some recognition for it.”
How long have you worked at the Bearded sailor?
Since it opened. I came for an interview for counter staff in 2016 and then I started helping the friers when they were busy. This led me to being part-time frying and counter staff.
What are your responsibilities?
My responsibilities are frying, front of house and ordering of the supplies.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
My favourite part of the job is cooking the food because I like knowing that I’m cooking someone’s tea or dinner. I have been cooking and baking since I was a kid so making someone’s tea to me means that I’m bringing a little bit of joy to someone’s day. Sometimes customers come in and tell us how much they’ve enjoyed it.
What’s your least favourite part of the job?
My least favourite part of the job is when it’s quiet because I’m not cooking!
What is it that you like about working at The Bearded Sailor?
I love the staff and the customers. The customers are awesome and because we’ve got to know them now, we can have little jokes with them. The other staff are really friendly too and it is a great place to work because we all get along and help each other out during the busy periods of the day.
How do you feel about being nominated as an unsung hero?
It was a surprise and I’m honoured to be a part of it.
