“When my husband Paul and I opened DJ’s in March 2021, we were new to the game. We took on Jon because he had experience and knowledge within the trade. He soon proved his weight in gold. We don’t need to ask Jon to do anything as he is always on top of everything, really proving that he is an asset to the team. Just recently he helped us achieve Fry Magazine’s Top 50, making us an award-winning fish and chip shop. We are so proud of him.

“Jon will only be with us until the end of the summer season this year when he will join his brother in Portugal to make a new life for himself. Both Paul, myself and the rest of the team are really going to miss him, but at the same time we wish him all the very best. Jon, here’s to you, we are so proud of you.”

How long have you worked at DJ’s?

I’ve been here at DJ’s for as long as they’ve been in business, so a little over a year now.

What are your responsibilities?

The question should be, what aren’t my responsibilities? I do a bit of everything from filleting the fish to preparing the chips, changing oil in the range, packing orders and, occasionally, frying and serving. Also running the shop when the bosses are away.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

In the morning, I’m the first one here so it’s music on loud while filleting fish. It honestly doesn’t feel like work.

What’s your least favourite part of the job?

Salt! It gets everywhere and I mean everywhere. Take my phone out of my pocket… salt! Get home and take my shoes off… salt!

What is it that you like about working at DJ’s?

I enjoy working at DJ’s because I have two great bosses who go above and beyond in everything and it makes it a pleasure to go to work. Whether it’s fancy dress, giving away freebies, taking the staff out for meals and drinks or just the banter, I’ve never once not wanted to go to work.

How do you feel about being nominated as an unsung hero?

It’s about time I was appreciated and acknowledged for my superior knowledge in this industry! No, seriously, it’s an honour and I couldn’t be prouder.
