Age: 56
Position: Front of house
Nominated by business owner Rachel Langley, who says: “Julie epitomises all of our family business values and is exceptional when it comes to delivering customer service. She has an amazing rapport with her colleagues, regularly being the person who brings a smile to their faces with her tongue-in-cheek and witty remarks. Likewise, during her time with us, Julie has built meaningful and valued relationships with customers. She’s the one they look out for when they visit. The time and effort Julie puts into fulfilling her role goes above any expectation, it’s just in her nature and I’m incredibly proud to have her as part of the team.”
How long have you worked at Elite Fish & Chips?
I’ve worked for the Elite for two and a half years. I got the job after popping in and asking a lady called Rachel (who unbeknown to me at the time was the boss lady) if there were any vacancies. I waited a few weeks for an interview, and all went well and here I am.
What are your responsibilities?
The most important responsibility I have is to be the very first hello to customers walking through the door to try and make that connection and make a good first impression (which I love). Aside from that, I’m responsible for showing customers to their tables, taking orders, running food and drinks, cleaning and resetting tables and operating the till.

What’s your favourite part of the job?
My favourite part of working at the Elite (hopefully not to get myself in trouble), is talking to the customers and meeting new and interesting people. I love to share a giggle and a story or two. Sadly, we might be someone’s only point of contact all week and I want them to remember that they are valued.
What’s your least favourite part of the job?
I really don’t have any unless we can class making drinks, especially tea! I don’t even have it at home, never drink it. The smell! Sorry tea lovers! I still do it though, I don’t like to shy away from anything.
What is it that you like about working at Elite Fish & Chips?
The customer and colleague interaction, we always have a laugh or two throughout the day. Plus, when it’s really busy, I get a workout and I’m being paid to do it -win-win! Rachel and her management team are always available to support us with any issues or just to generally check in with us and how we are.
How do you feel about being nominated as an Unsung Hero?
I thought it was an April Fool’s joke. It’s a huge surprise but so lovely to be recognised and appreciated for something I truly love doing. Thank you.
