Unsung hero

Job title: Manager

Age: 38

Nominated by: Owner Mark Drummond who says: Joanne makes my life so easy and enables me to have the time to do things like organise and judge the Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year competition and help others in the industry. She is hardworking, popular with the customers and recently made the final of the Employee of the Year category at The National Fish & Chip Awards 2024.”

How long have you worked at Towngate Fisheries?

I started working for Mark at his previous shop just before my 16th birthday. When Mark sold that shop, I left to pursue a career as an air hostess. After having my children, I went back to work for Mark at Towngate Fisheries which was 13 years ago. I retrained as a frier shortly after and became shop manager in 2020.

What are your responsibilities?

I manage the day-to-day running of the shop including ordering, staffing, prep, frying and I still serve from time to time too.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

To this day, my favourite part of the job is serving the customers and having a chat with them.

What’s your least favourite part of the job?

I don’t really have one!

What is it that you like about working at Towngate Fisheries?

I like working at Towngate because we have a lovely set of staff and customers.

How do you feel about being nominated as an unsung hero?

I feel overwhelmed and incredibly proud that I’ve been nominated.
