A positive mindset is needed to drive success this year, says Richard
I’m hoping for a positive year. We’ve had far too many negative years recently, and it’s time to refocus, motivate everyone, and remind ourselves why we do what we do. Customers don’t want to hear how hard it is all the time – they come to us for a great experience, not our worries. So, we’re staying positive, trying new ideas, and finding exciting ways to bring people in, even when they are bit short in the pocket.
For example, this winter, we have introduced a Locals Menu Monday to Friday. It’s a two or three course set menu that changes weekly, so it gives people the opportunity to experience our restaurant for a slightly cheaper price. It’s been so popular and already it’s proving our busiest winter so far.
For us, brand positivity and awareness are really important. We’re a family business that’s been in the North East for 100 years, and giving back to our community has always been part of who we are. Now this is more important than ever so we’ve been doing more with local theatres, sports teams and charities. For example, we’ve partnered with the Customs House theatre in South Shields, sponsoring their pantomimes. It’s a charity-funded venue that brings so much joy to the area, and it deserves the support.

We’ve also worked with local football teams, providing sponsorships and donating to its charity events. This allows us to reach new audiences while supporting important causes. It’s all about putting positivity out there. When you give back, it does come full circle.
One way we stay ahead is by listening to our team. We hold monthly staff meetings where they share ideas based on what they’re seeing and hearing from customers. They’re out there every day, so they know what’s trending and what people want. Social media is a huge tool for us now, and we use it to push new ideas and reach more people.
Looking ahead, we’re planning a rebrand of our takeaway this year. There aren’t many seafood takeaway options along the coast, so we want to create more of a seafood shack vibe, with options like our seafood tacos, which are already really popular.
To me, standing still isn’t an option. New projects and ideas keep things exciting – for me, the team and the customers. When your team is motivated and engaged, it creates a positive environment. My number one goal for this year is to make work feel like home for my staff. If they love being here, that positivity will naturally carry over to our customers.
