A fish and chip shop is opening in London but nothing on the menu is edible, because everything is made entirely from felt.
Launching this Friday at the Lyndsey Ingram Gallery in Mayfair, Bourdon Street Chippy is a full-sized, fully immersive chippy from textile artist Lucy Sparrow.
Known for her large-scale recreations of everyday spaces, Lucy has transformed the gallery into a nostalgic, tactile love letter to the classic British takeaway. Including a counter, banquette seating, menus, signage and a portrait wall of fictional famous patrons, every item is handmade from felt.
In total, more than 65,000 individually handmade pieces bring the chippy to life. Visitors can order their Friday night supper — battered cod and chunky chips alongside favourites such as curry sauce, mushy peas, Sarson’s vinegar and Heinz Tomato Ketchup — all served in hand-sewn cones and boxes. There’s even a “wall of sauce” perfect for posing in front of, blending the lines between art installation and nostalgic experience.
This isn’t Lucy’s first felt creation: previous projects including a deli in London, a pop-up bagel shop in New York, and even a felt McDonald’s in Miami.
The Bourdon Street Chippy is open from 1st August to 14th September, Wednesday to Sunday from 11am-6pm and is free to enter.
