Middleton Foods is once again supporting trade organisation NEODA (the National Edible Oil Distributors Association) as a headline sponsor of National Fish and Chip Day.
Back for a ninth year, National Fish and Chip Day 2024 has moved from its traditional Friday slot to Thursday 6th June to mark the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, the largest naval, land and air operation in history.
Speaking about its continued support of NEODA’s National Fish and Chip Day, Ryan Baker, sales manager at Middleton Foods, comments: “It’s our great pleasure to continue to support National Fish and Chip Day, and we’re especially proud to be involved in 2024 when it’s the 80th Anniversary of D-Day.
“Fish and chips is a staple British meal, it’s iconic. Recognising its importance during WWI and WWII is very special, and we know the nation will get behind the 2024 campaign. The Day celebrates all that is great about our incredible fish and chip trade – from the fishermen and farmers to the owners and operators who work hard to make fish and chips such an integral and enjoyable part of communities up and down the UK – and we know on Thursday 6th June, as we tuck into a chippy dinner, we’ll be thinking very much of those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that so many of us can enjoy the freedom our lives have today.”
Fish and chips has long been associated with the World Wars and D-Day, with prime minister Winston Churchill referring to them as “good companions” and believing that they were so valuable to morale that he refused to ration them. What’s more, during the D-Day landings, soldiers who found themselves behind enemy lines and needed a way of telling whether someone was a friend or foe, devised a two-word code… one called ‘fish’, the other replied ‘chips’!
