The 300 Chelsea Pensioners who reside at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London enjoyed a belated National Fish & Chip Day last week thanks to ingredients supplier Ceres.
The official date for National Fish & Chip Day was three months earlier on Thursday 6th June, which clashed with the hospital’s Founder’s Day. Not wanting the retired British Army veterans to miss out on the celebrations, Ceres pushed the date back to Friday 6th September.
It is the second year that Ceres has hosted the fish and chips lunch at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, providing the cod, batter mix, Pea Seasoning for the mushy peas, and curry sauce.
The veterans shared memories of enjoying fish and chips over the years, with many saying how their National Fish & Chip Day lunch outdid their weekly ‘Fish & Chip Fridays’.
Commenting on hosting the event for a second year, Stelios Theocharous, managing director at Ceres, said: “We were deeply honoured to return to the Royal Hospital Chelsea and cook for the Chelsea Pensioners once again, giving them a meal they truly deserve. Their service to our country can never be fully repaid, but serving them our national dish is a small way to say thank you and to show that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
“The Chelsea Pensioners are an extraordinary group of men and women — not only because of their dedicated service to our country but also for their vibrant personalities and sense of fun. We didn’t want them to miss out on National Fish & Chip Day so we decided, why not just host it later in the year? It really was wonderful to be reunited with them once again.”
