Industry well-represented at FreeFrom Awards


Nine fish and chip shops have made it through to the finals of this year’s FreeFrom Eating Out Awards, demonstrating the sector’s commitment to catering for dietary requirements.

In the Fish & Chips Category, sponsored by Middleton Foods, six shops have made the grade: D Fecci & Sons, Tenby, Wales; Fiddlers Elbow Fish & Chips in Herefordshire; Scotts Fish & Chips in York; Something Else Fishy in Dorset; The Real Food Café, Tyndrum, Perthshire; Vinegar Jones in Cumbria; and Welcome Stranger in Cornwall.

Meanwhile, making the shortlist of a brand new FreeFrom Newbies category, aimed at outlets that have been offering a free from/allergy aware menu for two years or less, is The Fish Works in Largs.

Vinegar Jones in Cumbria has also secured a place in the Creme de la Creme category along with David’s Fish & Chips in Devon, an award only open to entrants who have won their categories in previous years,

And finally, as well as making it through to the Fish & Chip Shops Category, Scotts Fish and Chips is also a finalist for the Focus on Gluten award which recognises establishments that have Coeliac UK's GF accreditation.

Commenting on making the final of two awards, Tony Webster, owner of Scotts Fish and Chips, said: “This is the first time we have entered the Free From Eating Out Awards, so being shortlisted in two categories is a fantastic achievement. It’s another feather in our cap.
“We are very proud of our gluten-free fish and chips, and customers with coeliac disease and a wheat intolerance travel long distances to eat from our menu. They do so because they know they can trust us with its preparation and service.
“We go to great lengths to ensure the ingredients and utensils never get mixed up. The fish is cooked in a separate fryer and is served with gluten-free bread and butter.
“The team here are trained to keep the gluten-free food separate and handled differently to the regular fare, ensuring those on gluten-free diets will know that their own specific needs are taken into account.”

The FreeFromEating Out Awards are designed to recognise and reward those outlets successfully catering for customers with dietary requirements and include 10 categories aimed at the whole industry from food manufacturers, hotels and pubs to restaurants, street food vendors and takeaways.

The awards presentation will take place on 20th November at Food Matters Live at London's Excel, where finalists will be presented with gold, silver or bronze awards.
