Papa’s puts in plans for coal fired range at new York shop

Papa’s is planning to open its first fish and chip takeaway in York city
centre with a coal fired frying range cooking the food.

The proposed takeaway in Parliament Street will take the place of a phone accessories shop which is currently operating within the three storey, grade 2 listed building.

Papa’s has submitted plans to York Council to revise the shop front to allow for a central door into the takeaway as well as the installation of a coal fired range located centrally across the width of the ground floor. Cooking and prep areas will be located behind the range as well as in the basement.

Dino Papadamou, who owns the business with his father Sid and brother George, comments: "As purveyors of Britain's best fish and chips, we are hoping to create something of cultural and historical significance to the city of York. An iconic experience that we hope people will travel for miles to sample. The nation's favourite dish cooked in the world's oldest coal powered frying range, offering a truly unique and traditional British taste."

The plans are yet to be approved and an objection has already been lodged in respect of an industrial scale coal fired range being used in the city centre as well the potential damage caused to the fabric of the building by the installation of the flue.

Papa’s currently operates five further fish and chip restaurants, including sites in Cleethorpes and Hull, although this is soon to be seven after buying Harry Ramsden's Scarborough site last month, the same time as starting work on opening a cafe and takeaway in Bridlington.
