Seven shops make BTA shortlist

Seven fish and chip shops have made it through to the finals of the British Takeaway Awards (BTAs).

Six of these are finalists in their regions and comprise Lynbay in Illfracombe, Devon (South West), Mr Chips in Stourbridge (West Midlands), Rollo’s Fish and Chips in Lanark (Scotland), Fiddlers Elbow in Leintwardine (Wales) as well as Feeleys Fish and Chips and Nemo’s Fish and Chips, both in Belfast (Northern Ireland).

Along with the other takeaways that have made it through, the chippies will now be marked on a mystery shop and will provide a written submission on why they deserve to win their region. A panel of judges, including restaurant industry innovator, businesswoman and former star of BBC2 Dragon’s Den Sarah Willingham and UK managing director of Just Eat Graham Corfield will review the results and identify the 12 regional winners. Each winner will receive £1,000 while one will also be crowned the overall victor for Best Takeaway in Britain and take home a cheque for £5,000.

Chris’s Fish and Chips in Barwell, Leicester, meanwhile, is up for two awards,  Britain’s Best Takeaway Chef and Game Changer, which celebrates a restaurant that is shaking up the status quo in the industry. It was singled out for its commitment to sustainability, serving only responsibly-sourced fish and locally grown potatoes. Also impressing the judges is that fact that 99% of its packaging, 70% of waste materials and 100% of its used oil are recycled.

Run in association with Just Eat, the BTAs celebrate and recognising the small and often family-run businesses that work tirelessly to serve the nation’s favourite takeaways.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at The Savoy, London, on 12th November.

The full list of finalists across the 12 regions is available by clicking here.
