Pukka picks its pie superfan



A 36-year-old Shropshire woman has been crowned the UK’s ultimate pie fan, following a nationwide competition to celebrate Pukka 
Pies’s 55th year anniversary.
 
Katie Peal, a facilities manager from Telford, has tried hundreds of the pastry treats and even did a stint as a judge at the British Pie Awards.

Her pie sampling began just three years ago, however, with a Pukka Chicken Balti at a football game. Since then, Katie has visited around 50 football stadiums to watch her beloved AFC Telford, all in the name of keeping her eyes on the pies. She even has a private collection of personalised pie cutlery to help her munch her way through her favourite food.
 
“After my first Pukka Pie on a cold December evening, it was the start of a love affair,” commented the Pukka Pie Superfan, Katie Peal.
 
“I’ve spent the last three years eating my way through all sorts of pies and pastries at non-league football grounds in the north of the country, but it’s true what they say – a girl never forgets her first! I’m thrilled to be crowned a winner in the Pukka Pies Superfan competition and at last, I feel like my love is now no longer unrequited.”
 
Katie, who writes a blog called The Away Day Pie Girl, caught the eye of the judges with her unique entry, where she submitted a picture of her very first football match pie.

Determined to prove her love for pie even further, she coupled the post with a picture of her personalised ‘Away Day Pie Girl’ pie fork, her pie-themed ring and an image of her sporting a classic Pukka Pies apron.
 
After making it to the final two last week, it was left to the public to decide Katie’s fate – and following a week-long social poll, she won by a landslide with twice as many votes as the runner-up, across the brand’s Twitter and Facebook pages.
 
Katie will receive a year’s supply of Pukka Pies and a true pie superfan experience - an exclusive tour of the renowned Pukka bakery, a tasting of the newest products in the Pukka range and a pie-making masterclass where she can cook up her dream recipe.
 
Lindsay Filmer, head of marketing at Pukka Pies, says: “Katie submitted a stand-out entry which oozed personality, and she really proved to us how dedicated she is to Pukka Pies during our 55th year. Keeping her eyes on the pies paid off and we’re delighted to name her our winner!”
