Since opening Harbourside Fish & Chips in Plymouth in 1999, owner Sarah Lock has made it her mission to serve the healthiest fish and chips she can, from cutting chunky chips that absorb less oil, to nutritionally analysing her food, to introducing grilled fish, salads and jacket potatoes. Not only have her efforts lead to an increase in sales of fish and chips, but sales of healthier options in particular have risen 25% in the last two years.


Always looking do more, Sarah recently switched from frying in groundnut oil to FlavOil High Oleic Sunflower Oil, claimed to be the healthiest frying medium on the market due to a high content of Omega 9 monounsaturated fatty acids, which help lower bad cholesterol in the body.

Sarah comments: “I’ve been told it’s the healthiest cooking oil on the market and that’s a great message to be able to communicate to my customers. We want our customers to make an informed decision about what they are eating, which is why we’ve done things like nutritionally analyse our food and display the calorie and fat content.”

As well as its nutritional make-up scoring points - FlavOil is non-hydrogenated, contains low levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids and no trans fats or cholesterol - it resists oxidation. Sarah comments: “Because you can fry at quite a high temperature without it breaking down, less oil is absorbed into the batter and the chips, making our food even healthier. Because less oil is being absorbed, we’re also finding it’s keeping the fish crispier for that little bit longer, too.”

The benefits don’t end there as not only is FlavOil cheaper than the groundnut oil Harbourside was previously using, it’s also lasting a minimum of 20% longer. And, using the smaller 15 litre bag-in-box format, means it’s easy to store, lighter for the staff to lift and pour into the pans and, when finished with, the box and plastic container can be recycled.

Sarah concludes: “Customers are really enjoying the taste of FlavOil and we’re serving a quality product. I couldn’t use anything if I didn’t think it was the best on the market, and that goes for our oil too.”
