When a fire broke out two years ago at one of Bicester’s oldest fish and chip shops, Golden Kitchen, it caused almost £100,000 worth of damage. It was not only a distressing time for the owners, who had been in charge of the shop for more than 40 years, but also for manager Daniel Menezes, who had been at the helm for the past nine years.
With his freshly cut chips, frozen at sea cod, kids meals and lunchtime boxes, Daniel had built up the takeaway, situated on a housing estate, to become a thriving business and queues wrapping twice around the shop were a regular sight. So the thought of closing the business for four months while it was refurbished wasn’t a decision Daniel relished. “At the time we didn’t know how long we were going to be closed for, it just felt like such a long time and there was so much to deal with, the insurance being the main one.”
One area Daniel didn’t have to concern himself with was the frying range after a recommendation came from a friend to try Sussex Catering
. “I liked what Sussex Catering had done for other shops," says Daniel, "so I explained exactly what I wanted, the spec and the measurements, and it was really nice and easy to work with them. They understood what I wanted, the schedule they gave me they kept to and everything was spot on.”
With a week to go before the shop was due to open, a three pan counter range with two heated cabinets was installed and so training could begin. That was almost a year and a half ago and Daniel and the team are as pleased with the range now as they were then.
“It’s nice and works well, it cooks fast, it’s economical on the gas, it’s easy and simple to use and it comes back up to temperature quickly. So far, so good,” says Daniel.
Choosing to go with a curved stainless-steel counter with blue LED downlighters to complement the colour scheme of the shop, the range proved a real talking point with customers who were glad to see their local chippy back open. Daniel adds: “We had so many comments when we first opened with everyone saying how nice and bright it looks.
“I was worried about being shut for such a long time, but customers have come back and trade is consistent with how it was before the fire, which is great, and even now we keep getting good comments about our food.”
