Success for world’s highest chippy

Two fish friers have completed their goal of opening the world’s highest pop-up chippy on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Malachy Mallon from Dolphin Takeaway in Dungannon, County Tyrone, and Alan Hanna from Pitstop Fast Food in Kilkeel, County Down, started their trek seven days ago, finally reaching Barufu camp yesterday where they set up their pop-up fish and chip shop 15,000ft above sea level.

The menu comprised sustainably sourced Granit cod fillets supplied by Unique Seafoods cooked in Goldsensheaf batter and served with maris piper chips, accompanied by mushy peas, tartare sauce and lemon. There were also McWhinneys sausages and fish goujons on offer, all cooked in equipment from Florigo.

Due to zero communications at over 15,000ft, pictures and videos are yet to come back, but a report on the pair’s Facebook page stated: “ Lucky climbers arrived in their droves to partake! The atmosphere in Barufu camp was absolutely electric (albeit a bit lacking in oxygen!) as everyone celebrated this #WorldFirst victory!”

The pair will now continue their trek to the summit - over 19,000ft above sea level in a bid to raise £10,000 for The Fishermen’s Mission. To donate £5 text FRYY50 £5 to 70070. Alternatively, visit the JustGiving page by clicking here.
