Four fish and chip restaurants in The Good Food Guide 2019

Four fish and chip restaurants have appeared in the latest edition of The Good Food Guide

The Magpie Cafe in Whitby, Colmans in South Shields, Ricks Stein’s Fish in Falmouth and Solebay Fish Company in Southwold all feature in the guide, published today by Waitrose.

The go-to-book for finding delicious food described Colmans Ocean Road as having it all, saying “the fish is local and ‘always of the best quality’, the chips are second to none, and the staff are simply lovely”. It also complimented the sea views, Yorkshire beers and workaday wines.

Of The Magpie Cafe it praised the fact that despite a refurbishment following a fire last year, nothing seems to have changed, and recommended customers come for its deeply flavoured sea bass, flawless scallops and, of course, classic, beautifully battered fish and chips.

Taking the top spot in the guide’s annual Top 50 restaurants for the second year running is Nathan Outlaw’s seafood restaurant in Port Isaac, Cornwall. It was praised for the fact it combines the freshest ingredients, from shellfish and fish from sea and estuary to locally grown fruits and vegetables, a brilliant wine list and excellent service. The restaurant was also noted for having ‘a refreshing lack of pomp’ with a tasting menu that is ‘ingenious in its simplicity, yet continues to surprise’.

Featured for the first time is a list of restaurants that have a dedicated plant-based menu, reflecting the growing trend for vegan food.

In compiling the guide, its editors noted an increasing trend towards zero waste restaurants transforming leftovers into things to eat, as well as the concept of pre-payment, putting the responsibility of an empty table in the hands of the diner rather than the restaurant.

The guide does criticise some eateries for still baffling customers with incomprehensible menus.
