Unsung Hero...

  Joanne Newman

Job title: Team member

At: Towngate Fisheries, Idle, Bradford

Age:  32

Nominated by: Mark Drummond, owner, who says: Joanne first worked for me age 16 at my previous fish and chip shop. After I sold the shop, she left to become an air stewardess. A few years later, I bought the shop back and Joanne returned to work for me. When I sold the shop a second time, she came to work for me at Towngate Fisheries (traveling across Bradford to do so). Even though she only works part-time, she has become an indispensable part of the team at Towngate Fisheries, both frying and serving, but also organising everyone (including me) on the very busy shifts. We all affectionately refer to her as "The Boss" and have even added it to her name badge. Joanne has also become an agony aunt to half of Idle!

How long have you worked at Towngate Fisheries?
I followed Mark to Towngate Fisheries in 2011 when he sold his other shop where I worked, although I first worked for Mark in 2002.

What are your responsibilities?
I work around 20 hours a week and both fry and serve, and I also keep everyone under control.

What’s your favourite part of the job?
Customer satisfaction. I like the fact that customers feel comfy telling me things that are going on in their lives and come back to tell me how they have got on with certain things.

What's your least favourite part of the job?
Bringing the chips through from the outside storeroom (but I can normally sweet-talk one of the men to do that for me).

What is it that you like the most about working at Towngate Fisheries?
We are a small team and all get on well together. It has a very family feel to it and doesn't feel like work.

How do you feel about being nominated as an unsung hero?
Very proud and overwhelmed - and slightly worried about what Mark will say about me being the boss!
