To reach this stage, industry experts have assessed paper entries from all shops that put themselves forward, judging criteria such as sustainable sourcing policies, staff training, menu choice and marketing.

Over the coming weeks, shops will be subjected to further judging as they receive mystery shopping assessments, whittling the line-up down to 20 takeaways.

These will then go into a football-style draw in which two shops will be paired up and judged against each other to decide which goes through to the national final judging stage.

Marcus Coleman, chief executive officer at Seafish, comments: “This award category showcases the leading fish and chip takeaways across the land, the shops that we all love to buy our fish supper from. The calibre of this year’s Top 60 is extremely high and provides a true representation of the quality found within the fish and chip sector."

The winner will be announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards in London in January.
