Mitch Tonks named MSC Chef of the Year



Rockfish seafood restaurants in Devon is now home to one of the country’s most sustainable chefs, after Mitch Tonks was named Chef of the Year at the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) annual UK awards.

The title was awarded in recognition of Mitch’s commitment to serving certified sustainable, traceable fish at his Devon-based restaurants, as well as his advocacy for sustainable seafood.

For six years now, Rockfish has offered its customers certified sustainable Norwegian cod and haddock as part of its everyday menu.

The award also recognises Mitch’s work on advocating sustainable seafood – he’s spent most of his adult life on a mission to convert more people to eating fresh and sustainable fish.
  
Rockfish restauranteur and chef Mitch Tonks said: “I feel incredibly honoured to receive Chef of the Year award. Sustainable seafood is something that is close to my heart. When I started out in my seafood career, sustainability wasn’t even mentioned. Over the years, we have all come to realise how important sustainability is. I feel it’s the job of chefs and retailers now to only sell sustainable seafood, why would you sell anything else?”

The annual MSC awards gave out 15 accolades with Menu of the Year going to Café Rouge, which this year put MSC-certified seafood on its menu nationwide, while Brakes picked up the award for Foodservice Wholesaler of the Year and Fresh Foodservice Wholesaler of the Year went to M&J Seafood.  Supermarket of the Year  was awarded to Sainsbury’s.
