Auckley Friery goes bigger with Barland

Bought in 1996 as an investment, Auckley Friery in the small village of Auckley in Doncaster had been getting busier and busier over the years to the point where the 20 year old range was struggling to keep up with demand.

With the decision made to replace the range with a four pan Florigo, owner Dave Nicalou took the opportunity to refurbish the takeaway at the same time. He enlisted Barland Shopfitters to start the shopfit between Christmas and New Year and within three and a half weeks of closing, Auckley Friery was back open with a bigger, brighter and more modern takeaway.

Featuring new floors, walls and ceilings, lighting, colour scheme, digital menus and a stunning floor to ceiling coastal image on one wall, Dave is overwhelmed with the end result, adding: “The finish is absolutely superb. Barland are so switched onto the fact that everything is on show and that people are going to see it. Even the screw heads all line up.”

But it’s not just the aesthetics of the shop that Dave is pleased with, it’s also the new space he’s been given which is easier to work in and with. He adds: “We knew we wanted to make the shop bigger by removing a wall at the back, but then Barland started suggesting other walls that could come down as well as further ideas to make the shop look bigger than I thought was ever possible. We’ve now got space behind the range with undercounter fridges and freezers so everything we need is pretty much at the end of our fingertips now. We don’t need to keep running out to the freezers anymore.”

Devising the colour scheme too - a collection of cool greys, blues and whites, Barland has created a welcoming environment for customers as well as staff,  with Dave adding: “I absolutely love the colour scheme, it’s so relaxing to work in. We’ve got a suspended ceiling with blue lights and when you come in and turn the lights on in the morning it’s so calming.”

With business up 15% on what it was taking before the refurbishment and many of those new customers now continuing to return, Dave believes the investment was well worth it, adding: “I thought the refurbishment was going to be horrendous but there was no stress at all. Everything Barland said would happen, did happen. And even when we asked them to do some extra bits and pieces, which pushed them on their deadline, they nailed it. They never lost patience, they were very pleasant to do business with and incredibly easy to get on with.”
