London gets a taste of vegan fish and chips



Sutton and Sons in north London is adding vegan fish and chips to its menu - the first chippy in the capital claiming to offer the dish.


The Stoke Newington branch has added the option to the menu following the successful trial of various different options in Veganuary.

Looking for something more true to a cod and chips than is possible with tofu, owner Danny Sutton has developed his very own unique recipe, which he believes tastes remarkably like the real thing due to a marinating process in seaweed.

Vegan fish and chips will be available from tomorrow at £8.50 to eat-in or £7.50 to takeaway and will run alongside a comprehensive vegan-friendly menu which includes a pie, gravy, sausages, prawns, mayonnaise and tartare sauce.


 
The installation of a new Henry Nuttall frying range means one of the pans can be used exclusively for the vegan options.
 
Commenting on the new vegan fish and chips, Danny Sutton said: “Having developed recipes with fish from our own fishmongers for the last decade, it was a real challenge to try and replicate Brit’s favourite cod and chips but I reckon we’ve smashed it.

“We’ve seen a huge surge in customer demand for vegan options and after the popularity of trialling the dishes in Veganuary we have decided to offer the menu all year round. Who knows, we might open the first vegan fish and chip shop next.”
