Mushy peas celebrated with first ever national day

A fish and chip shop owner from Cornwall is championing the humble mushy pea by introducing its very own national day.

Pete Fraser of Harbour Lights in Falmouth has joined forces with fish and chips wholesaler Friars Pride to launch the first ever International Mushy Pea Day on Friday 10th November 2017.

Pete Fraser comments: “International Mushy Pea Day on the 10th November is an opportunity to turn the spotlight locally, nationally and internationally on the best side dish in the world.

“Giving the mushy pea the limelight for the day is a great talking point with customers, an opportunity to spoil pea fans, or to convert the not so sure.”

Fish and chip shops are being encouraged to take part in International Mushy Pea Day with promotions and offers, anything to get the nation talking of the great taste, versatility and health benefits of the mushy pea. It's also hoped that the day will create an opportunity to raise money for a local or national charity, adding a feel good factor to the event as well.

Harbour Lights will be kick-starting the campaign by reducing the price of peas by 50% on the day and donating 100% of the takings to a charity of its choice.

A dedicated website is in development (www.mushypeaday.com), along with Facebook (mushypeaday), Instagram and Twitter #mushypeaday pages where shops can go for inspiration, share their plans and download a poster.

Friars Pride customers will also receive a copy of the poster with their Good News leaflet.
