Union Jack shopfront to be replaced by local artwork



The owner of a fish and chip restaurant in Leicester whose Union Jack shopfront has divided the local community is changing the bold paint job.


The Fish & The Chip in Jubilee Square opened in August with the striking design to celebrate the fact it would be serving great British food and to mark its change from an AA rosette fine dining restaurant. However, the patriotic paint job on the 80 seater restaurant and takeaway has split local opinion with owner Aatin Anadkat describing it having had the “Marmite effect”.

Aatin comments: “The response has been 50/50, some people are saying keep it, others are saying it’s great, but it’s time to go.

”It was always the plan to capture everyone’s imagination. If we had gone for a normal grey shopfront, we wouldn’t be having these conversations now, whereas we’ve got so many people engaging in it.”

The idea for the Union Jack shopfront not only tied in nicely with the fish and chips concept, but also the fact that the square where the shop is located was created to mark a visit from the Queen to the town during her Jubilee year in 2012.

The new front will form a space for artworks, the first to be carried out by the local college.

Aatin adds: ”We’ve not been asked by anyone to remove the Union Jack, I’d love to keep it forever, but phase two of our plan was always to watch the business evolve, so we’re going to work with the local art college on a project that will probably have a fish theme to it, something iconic. But we see it as something that will be constantly evolving and we’ll keep changing it regularly.”

Describing itself as a fish and chip concept for 2017, the restaurant serves up traditional fish and chips as well as gluten free and vegan versions alongside dishes such as lobster, skinny fries and crab sliders and beverages including a selection of gins, cocktails and prosecco.

Aatin adds: “Nowadays there is so much competition, you need to think out-of-the-box to grab people’s attention and get business in through the door. I guess you could say we’re pushing on what people conceive to be a fish and chip restaurant. And we’re having fun with it.”
