Growers plant increased area of chipping potatoes

British potato growers have planted an increased area of fresh chipping potatoes for the second year in a row.

According to figures released by AHDB Potatoes, just under 16,000 hectares of fresh chipping potatoes were planted in 2017, some 13% of the total planted area and the highest level for over five years.

Of all the potatoes planted in 2017, Maris Piper comfortably remains the most popular with three times more area than the next most popular variety, Markies.

Plantings of Sagitta, Agria, Cabaret, Accord and Fontane all increased slightly while Markies and Challenger saw a small decline. Maris Piper, King Edward, Ramos and Maris Bard all remained the same as the previous year.

Among those regions that saw an increase in planting area are Yorkshire and Humber, Wales and the East Midlands.
