Time to bale

A new waste management service claims it can save restaurants and takeaways up to 90% of their waste disposal costs - and the audit is free

UK hospitality and foodservice outlets produce almost 3 million tonnes of waste per year, of which packaging makes up 1.3 million tonnes.

With standard landfill taxes rising to £88.95 per tonne in April 2018, and the latest figures suggesting that UK businesses are still producing around 15 million tonnes of waste per year, disposing of packaging waste is only going to get costlier for the industry.

It’s why Wastekit, a key player in the UK’s waste management market, has launched Wastesaving Audit, a free service to help restaurants and takeaways recognise the cost and environmental benefits of baling and compacting waste.

The service includes a free site survey to review an outlet’s current waste management practices, a bespoke consultation to advise on where cost savings can be made and a free trial of a baler or compactor machine, plus training in how to use it. It’s described as the most comprehensive free audit with no obligation currently on offer in the waste management sector.

Joe Roberts, managing director of phs Wastekit, comments: “It’s surprising how many businesses are still unaware of the huge cost reductions that they can make using a baler or compactor machine. That’s why we felt compelled to do something to open their eyes to the savings and created the Wastesaving Audit.”

It is claimed balers and compactors can save restaurants and takeaways up to 90% of their waste disposal costs, which will have a huge impact on their bottom line.

The machines work by reducing the volume of general and recyclable waste by compacting it down and baling it, which means businesses can dramatically reduce the number of waste collections they need to pay for.

Joe adds: “A lot of businesses also don’t realise that they can actually make money from baled recyclables like cardboard and plastic. Selling baled recyclables to recycling companies can generate a whole new revenue stream for them and reduce their landfill tax bill. We work with many businesses to ensure they make the most of that opportunity.”
