Blackpool serves the cheapest fish and chips in Great Britain with the average portion costing £5.19, according to a survey by Hitachi Personal Finance.
Over £1.00 cheaper than the national average of £6.20, it is closely followed by Harrogate at £5.24 and Leeds at £5.39. Unsurprisingly, London charges the most for our national dish, with an average cost of £8.90, followed by Weymouth at £7.03 and Brighton at £6.70.
The survey looked at prices for a medium portion of haddock and chips, excluding any extras, at 250 chippies located in the top 25 domestic holiday destinations according to VisitEngland’s Great Britain Tourism Survey
The Fish and Chip Index, which is being used as the benchmark to see which locations offer better value for money and to measure how far staycation spending money will stretch this summer, shows a £3.71 disparity between the most expensive and the cheapest portions.
Theresa Lindsay, head of marketing at Hitachi Capital UK, says: “Our Fish and Chip Index offers a glimpse of contrasting costs throughout the UK. Many families considering a staycation this summer might want to take its finds into consideration before inadvertently spending more on their holiday at home than they would overseas.”
