Card surcharges to be banned this weekend

Fish and chip shop owners are being reminded that as of this weekend surcharges for payments taken by credit or debit card will be banned.

From Saturday 13th January, businesses will no longer be able to charge customers who pay by plastic or any method linked to them, like ApplePay or PayPal. This will apply to both instore and online payments.

The charge was initially introduced to allow businesses to cover the cost of processing card payments. However, some industries have seen to be profiting from the charges.

It is anticipated some shops may stop taking card, while others may introduce a price increase or a minimum spend for customers wishing to pay by card.

Online takeaway service Just Eat has scrapped its 50p charge for debit or credit card payments but introduced a new 50p service charge, which applies whether customers pay by cash or card.

For shop owners that settle their tax bill with a personal credit card, it’s worth noting that HMRC will no longer be accepting this method of payment – which came with a 0.5% fee. It will, however, continue to accept debit cards, as well as direct debits and bank transfers.
