Catering staff most likely to experience unwanted sexual attention

Those working in catering and hospitality are more likely to experience unwanted sexual attention than any other industry, according to new research.

In the survey of over 2,000 Britons aged 18 and above by, catering and hospitality topped the poll of 10 industries including retail, construction and entertainment.

Suggestive looks, inappropriate comments and inappropriate emails/messages are the top forms of harassment according to the research and, while the majority (78%) confessed it was from customers and passers-by, others experienced it from colleagues (15%) and management (7%).

When asked how respondents dealt with the situation, two-thirds chose to ignore it and carry on, whilst just one-fifth filed a complaint. Just 5% confessed that they confronted the individual over the matter directly.
George Charles, spokesperson for, commented: “Getting unwanted attention of any kind, sexual or not, can make people feel very uncomfortable. For many, they know how they’d react outside of the workplace, but in the workplace they’re worried about causing a scene or losing their job. We’d advise anyone to report the comments to their boss, or someone in a management position. We spend so much of our lives at work, we have a right to feel safe.”
