Bolton chippy up for sale after 50 years

A fish and chip shop and café that occupies a prominent location at the corner of Bolton Market has been put up for sale as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The Market Chippy is listed with Bury-based Blacks Business Brokers with a guide price of £59,950, plus a weekly rent of £230.

The Bolton chippy was founded in 1968 and during its 50-year history has become well known locally and has featured on television on a number of occasions, most recently in a programme fronted by newsreader and broadcast journalist Tony Morris.

The market chippy has in recent years only opened for 20 hours per week. This has resulted in a turnover of £85,000, generating a gross profit of £55,250 and a net profit of £27,000.

Opening onto the street at the front and into the indoor market hall at the rear, the shop includes a large dining area with seating for up to 54 customers. The well-equipped kitchen and servery includes a three-pan Ellidge & Fairley range.

Nikki Jones, listings manager at Blacks Business Brokers, said, “The Market Chippy’s location means it is never short of passing trade but, during its half-century in business, it has also established a really strong, loyal clientele. Unfortunately, Mr McGowan has not recently been able to open for as long as he previously did but there is massive potential for a new owner to increase turnover by reintroducing breakfasts and tea-time opening.”

All enquiries should be made to Blacks Business Brokers on 0333 370 0000 quoting reference number 6496.
