Plastic tax would “harm” the industry, says leading body



A leading organisation that represents the takeaway industry has hit out at plans by the Prime Minister to introduce a charge or tax on single use plastics, such as hot food containers.


The British Takeaway Campaign believes any such action will increase costs for small businesses and lead to higher prices for customers.

The comment follows the announcement of Theresa May’s plan which aims to get rid of avoidable plastic waste within 25 years.

Ibrahim Dogus, chair of the British Takeaway Campaign, said:
“While we agree that more needs to be done to reduce the use of plastics, a tax isn’t the right answer, as it will lead to increased costs for consumers and hurt the many small and independent businesses that make up the UK’s takeaway sector.

“Most takeaways are responsible when it comes to dealing with litter and the sector is already taking steps to encourage consumers to reduce, reuse and recycle. With takeaways reliant on having a cost effective solution to keeping customers’ food hot, an additional plastic tax will harm the prospects of an industry which contributes £9.4bn to the economy.”

The British Takeaway Campaign will be consulting its members to explore workable alternative solutions.

As well as a plastic tax, the Prime Minister has recommended an extension of the 5p plastic bag tax to all shops across England. Currently, shops with fewer than 250 employers are exempt from the charge, which since being introduced in England two years ago has contributed to a 90% reduction in their use - equivalent to nine billion less bags.
