Chester chippy earns MSC certification

Fish and Chips at Weston Grove in Chester is the latest chippy to earn MSC certification.

The shop, which was a finalist in the Best Newcomer category at the National Fish & Chip Awards last year and one of Fry Magazine’s Top 50 takeaways, can now use the MSC blue fish label on its cod and haddock. This not only assures customers that the fish sold has been responsibly caught using sustainable methods but also means it can be traced back to the fishermen who caught it.

Josette Foster, who owns Weston Grove with husband Richard, said: “We are passionate about protecting sea life and wanted to prove this to our customers by promoting the widely recognised eco label. Like us, the people of Chester care about sustainability of fish stocks so it is reassuring to know that they can trust us.”

The Weston Grove chippy has ambitious plans for sourcing and is participating in the Sustainable Palm Oil City project in Chester which means by June 2019 all palm oil it uses will be sourced from sustainable sources.

Loren Hiller, commercial officer at the MSC, said: “Weston Grove is an ambitious fish and chip shop who clearly care about sustainable sourcing. We are delighted that they can now assure their diners that the fish from Weston Grove is 100% traceable to a sustainable source.”
